France is on fire! A massive wildfire is raging near Paris

A forest fire in the Fontainebleau region, located approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) southeast of the French capital, Paris, has reached unprecedented proportions. According to emergency services, the blaze has already engulfed and destroyed more than 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) of forestland, making it the third-largest fire in northern France since 2006.

The situation is being exacerbated by the extreme heatwave that is currently raging across the country. A red alert is in effect in the region due to intense heat (heat levels reaching 39°C (102°F)), accompanied by low humidity and wind gusts of 30–50 km/h (19–31 mph). These weather conditions facilitate the rapid spread of fire through dry grass, heather, and pine forest floor.

Due to the threat of the flames spreading, rescuers urgently evacuated approximately 900 residents from areas adjacent to the forest and completely closed sections of the A6 and A5 motorways. The military helped quickly evacuate 150 horses from the Gran Parque equestrian complex. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or destruction of residential buildings.

Authorities are investigating the possibility of arson. The prefect and investigative bodies have noted a disturbing fact: approximately ten simultaneous fires were recorded within a radius of just 1,000 meters. An investigation is underway, and dozens of suspects in negligence and arson have already been arrested across the country amid the increasing frequency of summer fires. Firefighters estimate that it will take one to two weeks to fully contain this emergency.
