Der Kieler Hauptbahnhof ist der wichtigste Verkehrsknotenpunkt der schleswig-holsteinischen Landeshauptstadt und zählt zu den bedeutendsten Bahnhöfen Norddeutschlands. Er liegt unmittelbar südlich der Innenstadt am westlichen Ende der Kieler Förde und verbindet seit seiner Eröffnung im Jahr 1899 die Stadt mit dem übrigen Deutschland und Skandinavien. Der heutige Bahnhof ersetzte ältere Anlagen, die mit dem starken Wachstum Kiels im Zuge der Industrialisierung und der Entwicklung zur Reichskriegshafenstadt an ihre Kapazitätsgrenzen gelangt waren. Das repräsentative Empfangsgebäude wurde im Zweiten Weltkrieg schwer beschädigt und in den Nachkriegsjahrzehnten in vereinfachter Form wieder aufgebaut. Seit umfangreichen Modernisierungen in den 1990er- und 2000er-Jahren präsentiert sich der Hauptbahnhof als modernes Verkehrszentrum mit zahlreichen Geschäften, Gastronomie und direktem Zugang zum Sophienhof-Einkaufszentrum. Täglich nutzen mehrere zehntausend Reisende den Bahnhof, der von Regional- und Fernverkehrszügen bedient wird. Regelmäßige Verbindungen bestehen unter anderem nach Hamburg, Lübeck, Flensburg und in Richtung Berlin sowie darüber hinaus. Seine besondere Lage unmittelbar am Wasser macht den Kieler Hauptbahnhof zu einer Seltenheit in Deutschland: Nur wenige Schritte trennen die Bahnsteige von den Fähranlegern, Kreuzfahrtterminals und der Kieler Hörn. Dadurch bildet der Bahnhof eine Schnittstelle zwischen Schienen-, Bus-, Fähr- und Kreuzfahrtverkehr. Vor dem Bahnhofsgebäude befindet sich der zentrale Busbahnhof der Stadt, während sich südlich moderne Büro- und Hotelgebäude angesiedelt haben.
Kiel Central Station is the most important transportation hub in the capital of Schleswig-Holstein and ranks among the key railway stations in northern Germany. Located just south of the city center at the western end of the Kiel Fjord, it has connected Kiel with the rest of Germany and Scandinavia since its opening in 1899. The current station replaced earlier facilities that had become insufficient during Kiel’s rapid growth as an industrial city and imperial naval port. The original station building suffered severe damage during World War II and was rebuilt in a simplified form in the post-war period. Following extensive renovations in the 1990s and 2000s, Kiel Central Station has evolved into a modern transport center featuring numerous shops, restaurants, and direct access to the Sophienhof shopping mall. Tens of thousands of passengers pass through the station every day, using both regional and long-distance rail services. Regular train connections link Kiel with Hamburg, Lübeck, Flensburg, Berlin, and destinations beyond. Its location directly beside the waterfront makes Kiel Central Station unusual within Germany, as only a short walk separates the platforms from ferry terminals, cruise facilities, and the Kieler Hörn. This creates a seamless connection between rail, bus, ferry, and cruise transportation. In front of the station lies the city’s central bus terminal, while modern office buildings and hotels have developed in the surrounding area.
