━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Despite the lemons everywhere, Limone’s name likely comes from the Latin “limen” — boundary — marking the old border between Brescia and the Bishopric of Trento. Monks brought citrus here in the 13th century, and the town’s terraced limonaie became the northernmost commercial lemon gardens on Earth, shipping fruit to Germany, Poland and Russia until disease, southern competition and the brutal winter of 1928–29 ended the trade. Centuries of isolation also preserved something remarkable: in 1979, researchers found Apolipoprotein A-1 Milano in residents’ blood — a heart-protecting mutation traced to a single 17th-century couple that has helped a dozen of the town’s 1,000 residents pass 100.
