      We took a short excursion from Carcassonne on le Canal du Midi in April. It was awesome, and the Canal will be a focus of my next trip to France. Maybe cycling along the towpath.

      Great video and description of the experience. About 30 years ago I did a self-piloted barge canal trip in the UK and this seems like a much more relaxing experience.

      What happened after the tour was over? Did someone pick you up and take you back to the starting point did you rent a car at that end of the journey and drive back?

      not sure when this was filmed ,but for others following; Barbeques are banned at the moment because of the tinder dry environment and the risk of fire.

      I'd love to do this, but I'm mobilitychallenged, so all the stuff with tying up and dealing with the ropes makes it impossible. I wonder if there are excursions where someone else takes care of that, and you can just be a passenger?

      I am no psychic, but I have always thought the food would would beat anything in Paris alongside the canal and along smaller roads in small villages. It don’t think a tourist trap rarely visited by tourists would be very profitable.

      i went to le Somaïl once and i saw theses boats… i was not shure if i would like it, but now this video convinced me. looks very cool. Is it possible in a smaller boat only one person ?

      I’ve been wanting to do this for 15+ years. Le boat has discounts at different times of the year and for advance reservations. Mid June looks to be peak rates.

      We day rented a boat while staying in Toulouse for a couple of months and did the tunnel and Carcassonne etc. It was a great day. We are back in November and can’t wait to be back. Béziers was also wonderful.

      I have seriously considered purchasing a narrowboat in the UK. I Will admit that one of the attractive considerations off living on a boat is the ability to ship your boat to Scotland, Ireland, and France. From stance, you can proceed to Germany to the coast. Personally, I would probably travel the different (3?) North/South passages through France before going into Germany. Traveling to the Netherlands would (I think) require shipping the boat again. If I tired of all of the canals in England, I might take the narrowboat towards the sea and have a boatbuilder create 2 keels for the boat so that I could then navigate the oceans. However (BUT, but But, but and but) narrowboats are the antithesis of a speedboat. The canal speed limit is mostly 4mph. I watched a stack of videos of different narrowboats testing to se if 4mpg was possible and enjoyable. Most of the boats created massive wakes maximizing their speeds at 2mph and 2 of those owners are remarkably skilled in building and repairing engines and they enjoy fast. Fast cars, fast motorcycles, fast trucks. I am not sure how I would fare enjoying the world at 2mph. It MAY cause a heart attach. I am not excited about a fiberglass boat, though yours is lovely! Traveling the water in the northern hemispheres prompts me to dream of fireplaces. The next choice would be a Dutch Barge. Still thinking but whatever I choose will have to be capable of navigating France. (Narrowboats, are still boats similar to a stretched out shipping container. No keel, nothing to keep it bottom down. If one (narrowboat and pilot) tried ocean cruising, it would roll multiple times after being hit on the starboard or port sides before it sank. Cruising holds serious appear but sinking never has. I am about to adopt a 9year old boy which will put a different spin on EVERYTHING and we may stick to the states. 💔.

      Imagine our surprise to see you turn up at Le Chat Qui Peche!We live in the area! It is our favorite summer restaurant Fabien is an amazing chef. He also has a Christmas chalet in Carcassonne

      I stayed in this area for 5 months last winter and I loved Capestang and Colombiers (except when there were floods). Beziers definitely looks more inviting in the sunshine than it does without the flower boxes and in the pouring rain. I looked into renting a "Le Boat" but it was way outside my budget! Thanks for jostling my memories of a lovely part of France. Nice to see Charlie. He appeared to thoroughly enjoy piloting the boat (and is the spitting image of his maman!)

      It's an excellent video to present the Canal du Midi that I only knew from the side. So bad that it is reserved to few American and rare French people: it's an unaffordable luxury. Your experience is fascinating. I hope you'll can deduct this cruise as "frais professionnels".

      As a marine pilot, even though I wanted to reach through the screen and help with some of the maneuvers, I was incredibly entertained. Absolutely your best video so far!

      It appears you had a boatman at the helm….a great help, I can assure you. In September 2024 we were on a similar boat on the Canal Sete s Rhone through the Camargue. A terrific experience, but boat handling is not easy….far from it.

      Great video as usual. Had the joy of a week on the canal visiting many of the same places in 2003, before moving to the area the year after. We were able to visit many of the great restaurants regularly. Just one question though, having moved the boat to the side, why did you not tie it off so it was not a problem for others?

      We took a canal du Midi boat trip over 20 years ago. On one of the days, there was a huge storm, so we ran into the nearest restaurant, it was the one you went to in Homps. Still one of my favourite experiences. They cooked gambas soaked in cognac over a huge bbq and served it with a side of delicious fries and salad. We loved it in that area so much that we ended up moving to the Languedoc for a few years. A very special part of France that still has our hearts. We lived near Beziers and get back there as often as possible. Thank you for a trip down memory lane ❤❤

      I went with friends for 6 of their 10 day trip on the Canal du Midi, from Béziers to Carcassone – it was a blast! We did 40 locks, ourselves…that was work, and so much fun. Not sure why you needed such a big boat!…unless you had a team of photographers or something. My hostess cooked wonderful meals from food we bought at little market along the way, etc. We slept on the canal watching sunsets, and experiencing lovely evening breezes. Yes, it was s.l.o.w….what took 6 days by boat to Carcassonne, took 2 hours by train back!!! 😂 So, it you’re antsy, need to be busy doing things, watching tv, etc., maybe this trip isn’t for you.
