Nafplion, Greece – The Greek Seaside City Tourists Haven’t Ruined
Discover Nafplion, Greece — one of the most beautiful and authentic seaside cities in the country, and somehow still one of the places that mass tourism hasn’t completely changed.
In this immersive Nafplion travel guide, we explore a historic Greek city filled with Venetian fortresses, neoclassical streets, quiet beaches, local tavernas, and incredible views over the Argolic Gulf. Unlike many of Greece’s most famous destinations, Nafplion still feels lived-in, relaxed, and unmistakably Greek.
Our journey begins along the beautiful Nafplion harbor, before climbing high above the city to the imposing Palamidi Fortress, where we explore its massive walls, incredible viewpoints, and the prison connected to Greek revolutionary hero Theodoros Kolokotronis.
From there, we head into the heart of the old town and visit Syntagma Square, the historic center of Nafplion, before stepping inside the Archaeological Museum of Nafplion to uncover the ancient history of the Argolid region.
We then wander through Nafplion’s maze of winding streets, colorful buildings, quiet courtyards, and hidden corners — including a mysterious castle tucked away near the city.
Later, we make our way to Arvanitia Beach, where the cliffs meet the sea just steps from the old town, before slowing things down with a proper Greek-style siesta.
As evening approaches, we visit the historic Agios Spyridon Church, one of the most important landmarks in modern Greek history, before ending the day the best way possible — with fresh octopus and a traditional Greek dinner beside the sea.
Nafplion is the kind of place many travelers imagine when they picture Greece: historic, beautiful, relaxed, walkable, and full of atmosphere — but without the overwhelming crowds and commercialization found in many of the country’s better-known destinations.
If you’re planning a Greece travel itinerary and looking for what to do in Nafplion, this video shows the best sights, experiences, history, food, and hidden corners of one of the country’s most underrated cities.
