What the Anthony Bourdain Movie Doesn’t Show You
Tony, the A24 film about Anthony Bourdain, is set in Provincetown in 1976. He’s 19, he’s just been rejected from a writing fellowship, and he takes a summer job washing dishes. His estate supported the film because it doesn’t try to summarise a life — it’s about one summer.
Which means it ends forty-two years before Alsace.
In June 2018, Anthony Bourdain was in Kaysersberg, a village of four thousand people in eastern France, filming an episode of Parts Unknown that was never finished and never aired. He died there.
Eight years later, a chef threw a dart at a world map, blindfolded, on live
Romanian television. It landed on France. I found out after checking in that I’d booked the room he last stayed in.
