The Catbird Seat (*) – Nashville, TN

My first r/finedining review in celebration of my first Michelin-starred meal!

Before the review, a little about how I chose my first star. I am based in Nashville, TN, so my options were limited to three spots in town. I wanted a tasting menu for my first starred meal since I’ve not had one before (the closest I’ve had prior were 4- or 5-course prix fixe menus). I settled on The Catbird Seat because it is affiliated with a cocktail bar, Patterson House, that I wanted to try. It also seemed inventive without being stuffy, which was important to me since I’m only beginning my fine dining journey.

Now, the review:

This was my first Michelin-starred meal, and what a treat! The menu was creative and exciting. The plating was (mostly) beautiful, and the bites (mostly) reflected their beauty. The myriad of textures for each dish were pleasing, and the thoughtfulness of the flavors was great. There were a few tastes that echoed across the different courses. Some might find that lazy, though I found it gave the meal consistency and grounded it in one culinary realm.

My favorite savory dish was probably the omelette with preserved ramp bulbs and a morel dashi. Other standouts were the entire lamb course (though the plating left much to be desired), the fried green tomato, and the beef and bee balm croustade.

My favorite sweet dish was the hoja santa and lime sorbet/foam. The hoja santa was absolutely delightful. The melon cordial was also excellent.

I struggled with the inclusion of foie gras in a dessert course, though the waffle crisp on top was delicious. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the oyster course, though that’s more a personal preference; I feel it was executed as it should have been (and the apple relish was quite good).

The service was stellar. Everyone was incredibly friendly and the explanations for the dishes were great. I could have done with fewer table touches to refill my water, as the bar seating arrangement makes it so the server has to reach around me to get to the glass, which I found to be slightly annoying at times. All my needs were anticipated; I just prefer to be left alone when I’m eating.

Overall, Catbird Seat is a delightful culinary experience. I would certainly return in a few months to sample whatever seasonal menu they have at that time.
