A TRUE HIDDEN GEM ! The Oldest Lake in Europe (Lake Ohrid Guide)
Welcome to Lake Ohrid, a stunning dual UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Often ignored for crowded European beaches, this hidden gem is Europe’s oldest continuously existing lake, estimated to be between 1.5 to 5 million years old.
In this video, we explore the jaw-dropping history, ancient cliffside churches, and crystal-clear turquoise waters that make Lake Ohrid the ultimate “Galapagos of Europe”. If you are looking for an affordable, jaw-dropping European destination that remains entirely underrated, this is it!
Lake Ohrid is a true geological marvel. Unlike most of Europe’s lakes, which were formed by melting glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age (~20,000 years ago), Ohrid is an ancient lake formed by tectonic activity over a million years ago. Because of its isolation, it holds over 200 endemic species—including the famous Ohrid trout—that exist nowhere else on Earth!
Next, we hop on a boat across the ultra-clear waters—where visibility reaches up to 70 feet—to visit the Bay of Bones Museum, an authentic recreation of a prehistoric stilt house village dating back thousands of years.

Welcome to MACEDONIA 🇲🇰
You almost find that sandy beach at the St.Naum Monastery, but I think you made a wrond turn right insead of following the road and you end up close to Ljubanishta camp (where the people were swimming in the lake)… So I can just say that you missed the best spot around the Ohrid Lake, but that might be a reason for coming back to Macedonia soon
