For centuries, the Budapest city was two different cities: the city of Buda rising from the western hill and The Pest, stretching away into the flat plains of the east. The Danube river kept these two cities separated until 1873. In 1873, the foundation of the first of the eight bridges of Budapest began, and it stitched these two halves into one. The tale of two cities has undergone several destructions and renewal.
