One of the most beautiful villages in Spain

Alcalá del Júcar is one of the most picturesque towns in Spain, an inescapable visit for lovers of rural tourism, for adventure or for those who want to be impressed by the rich heritage of a unique municipality, declared Conjunto Histórico – Artístico by Royal Decree of 1982 .

As its name indicates, it is located on the banks of the Júcar river, in its final stretch in the castellano-manchega community, before entering the Valencian territories, where it ends. Narrow streets that climb up to the Castle, small houses, steep staircases, orchards and of course, the typical caves, make Alcalá del Júcar a unique architectural and natural ensemble.

LA MANCHUELA

“Alcalá del Júcar is the symbol of La Manchuela Albaceteña”
La Manchuela Albaceteña is a region located to the northeast of the province of Albacete, bordering to the north with that of Cuenca and to the east, with the valley of Cofrentes. La Manchuela has a differentiating aspect with the Llanos de la Mancha region, which gives it the passage of the Júcar and Cabriel rivers, creating a landscape of contrasts that surprises the visitor who has another expectation of what he can find in Manchegan lands.

Its Iberian, Arab and Roman past has bequeathed it a rich historical and cultural heritage, which makes it worthy of being considered among the best inland tourist destinations, being one of the most visited regions of Castilla – La Mancha.

Rural houses, hotels, leisure and free time activities, popular festivals… mark the dozens of itineraries that can be carried out in the Comarca de La Manchuela which, yes, must have Alcalá del Júcar as their starting point or arrival point.

Upon entering the region from Casas del Ves towards Alcalá del Júcar, following one of them, that of La Hoz del Júcar, the landscape around the river is very wild and runs between canyons of extraordinary beauty. This uniqueness makes Alcalá del Júcar one of the most spectacular and picturesque towns in all of Manchuela, which surprises us from a distance, as soon as it appears before our eyes. Their houses are embedded by the hillside climbing towards the castle from the feet of the river; a well-preserved farmhouse and some houses carved into the rock, make up a picture that has been reproduced a thousand times, but which in nature calls you to contemplation.

Alcalá del Júcar is undoubtedly the most important tourist center in La Manchuela, and a symbol of this region like no other.

The name of the city comes from the Arabic term Al-Kala, which means “the castle”, the fortress or the fort. This Arab city was conquered by Alfonso VIII of Castile, in the year 1213. Once conquered, the municipality was repopulated by inhabitants of Alarcón.

Around the middle of the 15th century, the castle, property of Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, was renovated.

This town was one of the customs posts on the route of the Royal Way from Madrid to Valencia. Its bridge, dating from Roman times, was renovated in the 18th century.
