More info about travel to Split: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/croatia/split Split’s residents are literally living in a Roman palace. In the fourth century AD the Roman Emperor Diocletian retired and built a vast residence to live out his golden years here in his native Dalmatia. Later when Rome fell, Diocletian’s palace was abandoned. Eventually, a medieval town sprouted from its abandoned classical shell and his mausoleum became a cathedral. To this day, the maze of narrow alleys — once literally Diocletian’s hallways — make up the core of Split. Nearby, the seaside promenade is perfect for a stroll. #ricksteveseurope #ricksteves #croatia

    1. many of the best emperors of the crisis of the third century and maybe even later were from Serbia like Marcus Aurelius Probus,Aurelian, Claudius Gothicus, Constantine the Great, Maximian,Constantius II,maybe Constantius Chlorus.although some of them were Illyrian orginally or Croatia like Diocletian,Valentinian I so these two countries are one of the reason the roman empire didn't collapse earlier and stayed for another 1000 years

    2. Split is second in Croatia after capital Zagreb and the most beautiful town on Adriatic coast….more than Dubrovnik…

    3. I used to live in palace next to chatedral or peristile. Now I live in part of Split were I have wive on beautifull adriatic sea.

    4. Was there over the weekend and a bit. Split old town is beautiful, safe, and has very friendly locals. The smell of sulphur engulfs the Riva so eat gelato. Keep on travelling!
