A few months ago Dirt the shop cat at the Nevada Northern passed over the “Rainbow Bridge”. And on May 28 over one hundred people came together to celebrate the life of “Dirt”.

Dirt was perhaps the world’s most famous cat. He had tens of thousands of followers on Facebook. Over 100 people traveled a total of thousands of miles to attend the memorial and over 20 million people viewed his obituary. The little cat known to the locomotive crews as “Dirt Bag” had become Dirt, King of the Shops.

Dirt was an amazing old soul in the body of a cat. He lived his whole life in the shops with the diesel and steam locomotives. He was born under the rotary snow plow and died in the machine shop in his custom caboose built by the crew for him.

    1. A lovely video and tribute to a legendary cat.
My plan this year was to see Dirt, but it wasn't long after I'd booked my flights came the sad news.
Oh well. His legacy will continue and the place will keep his presence. RIP Dirt.

    6. This boring never. I never meet Dirt but I can not say the same for the both of you, which I have no regrets. You might say I meet Dirt by proxy. I will make a donation to the headstone for Dirt after I finish this post.

    7. A really well done tribute here by you guys and the Nevada Northern.

I remember Dirt from some of your other videos. His markings are pretty unique. I haven't seen many gray and orange cats, almost like someone painted him.

He definiely made a good mascot and ambassador for the railroad!

I have a couple of cats myself. Brother and sister, Justin is big black and copper, long hair, possibly part Maine Coon, Julia is a shorthair Siamese. They are 9 now. They can be mischievous at times but they are sweethearts!

I hadn't watched all of the Nevada Northern videos yet, but I will probably go check some more out now. I'm sure Dirt is in most of them!

    8. There's been a LOT of legendary railroad animal mascots ovet the past 180 years, too many to name, but Dirt's name has been certainly added to that list. How fitting a rod brass is going into the statue!
Rest in peace Dirt. Rest easy at the Rainbow Bridge for your Nevada Northern friends, they'll come to you someday, never to be parted from you again.
