    City of Stories – A Walking Tour of Norwich (4K)



    Join me on a walking tour of the medieval city of Norwich guided by a group of students from UEA. The walk starts on St Andrew’s Hill and continues past Norwich Halls and the University of the Arts Norwich to the River Wensum. We continue walking the historic streets past the many medieval churches – Norwich is said to have more medieval churches than any city in Europe. We explore the majestic Norwich Cathedral, built in 1096 which has the second highest spire in England and then walk around the 11th Century Norwich Castle. The students also show us the heart of Norwich nightlife on Prince of Wales Road and the Queen of the Iceni pub by the riverside. Our walking tour passes the historic market which has been on this site for over 900 years and also the medieval Guildhall built in the early 1400s. We stroll through the beautiful Royal Arcade, built in 1899 and finish our perambulation of this beautiful city in St Benedict’s street.

      Another connection between Norfolk and East London is the Ingleby Family – they owned the Valentines Estate, and have portraits in Valentines Mansion in Gants Hill, and the family were also owners of Sedgford Hall Estate in (West) Norfolk

      that looked great, been to Norwich twice for football and saw nothing of their City….hopefully will be back in England next Summer for a month or so….Norwich on my list….the Meandering City.

      Great video John. I have not yet been to Norwich, but I must one day. York is also a nice city to walk around, if you have not done so already. I would say equally beguiling.

      I enjoyed this video, although a bit different from your usual style. What I did not enjoy was seeing a number of your viewers complaining about the behaviour of the young people who accompanied you on your walk. Just as the world is changing, so are its inhabitants. Lighten up a bit, mate. But not you, John; this is for the moaners.

      I'm a big fan of yours John – if only I'd have known you were visiting Norwich I would have come and said hello. I came to Norwich for work 20 years ago and stayed. It's a wonderful place to live and bring up a family. Good to see the 'youngsters' embracing what Norwich has to offer, they did you and the fine city proud with their musings. Even after all the years I'm still in awe of the history and architecture. You covered a lot but there's plenty left for you to discover on the next visit, whenever that may be!

      Great video. As an alumnus of UEA it was lovely to see the familiar streets of Norwich. The Royal Arcade is my favourite place in Norwich, beautiful Art Nouveau inspired decoration. Surprised they did not take you to Elm Hill, the most famous street in Norwich. Keep up the good work.

      Went to Chiswick today, and picked up a leaflet you might like. This leaflet is called " Chiswick Book Festival", and comes with a map, listing 36 notable dramatists, novelists and poets, like Sir John Betjeman, Alexander Pope and Dylan Thomas. who lived in the borough of Chiswick.
      If you would like this leaflet, i could post it to you.

      My 3rd great grandfather Robert Frost lived in the gaol (1841 census) as turnkey. His 1870 death certificate says he was living in the Castle Lodge (must have part of the prison when it changed to the “castle”. His son moved to London and in 1861 lived opposite Pentonville Prison….there’s a theme there somewhere !

      Hi, maybe the next time you visit Norwich it might be a good idea to accompany somebody who knows anything about the place other than the source of cheap drinks and kebabs, and " I think the river begins with a W" was just appaling from someone supposed to be clever enough to be at University.

      Thank you John such a delightful and uplifting film watching it certainly filled my heart with joy, and as your made reference to many watching having connections to Norwich and East London our family included.
      Can I just add what lovely bunch of young people all credit to them in a time where social media commentators often refer to the young in such disparaging ways.

      Naaarch is a town I spent many an happy and unhappy hour in. Many memories, I can't believe how much has changed and how much is still recognisable from the dark ages (1980's). Wandering drunk down Magdalen street and accidentally joining the army. Being disappointed in the job centre and wandering into HMV next door to lift my mood. Standing next my dad's car in the multi-storey car park and smelling the Rowntree's factory. Trying to convince my friends to start a band and call ourselves the Anglia square heroes.

      It's alright. I'm quite bored of it after all these years. Streets are very dirty nowadays and house prices are getting close to those in the south east. All the clubs play the same 10 tunes over and over. We recently had important anniversaries of two of our most famous women: Elizabeth Fry and Julian of Norwich, and no-one gave a shiny shite!

      This struck many a chord with me John as I lived in Norwich for quite a few years, now live 25 miles away on the North Norfolk coast.
      Norwich is indeed a fine City and well worth visiting, and one of the safest. For people over a certain age Prince of Wales Road is best avoided at night especially at weekends.
      Definitely one of my favourite Cities in the UK along with York which I'd love you to visit and video.

      Probably the worst tour guide of such an amazingly historic city I've ever witnessed. Here's a spoons and here's a spoons again! Oooo let's go to the mischief, probably one of the grottiest pubs in the county. Come back to norwich, but ditch the students.

      Great video John! One of my distant forebears, the famous Daniel Defoe, wrote in detail about Norwich. In fact, Daniel Defoe's son Benjamin was married in Norwich at the church St Helen in 1718 … which (if I am right) is still there on Bishopgate to the North of where most of your walk traversed.

      Having lived in East London for 20 years or so, I have always enjoyed your videos in that area and around the Lea Valley. Doubly pleasing to now see you walking around my newly adopted home of Norwich, especially as I was in the Bell and around Castle Quarter this morning. Keep up the good work.

      A nice tour of my city, but how did you walk almost straight past the church of Julian of Norwich, the first female author of a book in the English language?! Can also recommend the view of the city from the top of Mousehold heath, comprehensive and ever changing….

      Not much use asking UEA students anything about Norwich. The usual cliched 'facts' trotted out ad nauseum. Gave up when the name of the city's river unknown to students only interested in clubbing.
