I’d never been to Warsaw before and have to be honest, it was well down my list of places to visit in Poland. But I was also eager to give the place a chance and see if my preconceptions matched up with the reality. I don’t think it’s too much of a spoiler to say the answer to that is a resounding NO!!! Join me on a tour which is quite literally full of surprises…

I visited Warsaw on Thursday 11th May 2023.

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it’s as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don’t expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

    1. As an UW (Warsaw University) student, i will admit, BUW (Warsaw University Library) is absolutly amazing place to study. It is big, cozy, and overall relaxing. Only problem is, that if you want to read on the roof, you need to take out books, like if you want to take them home, as it is technicly outside of the library itself.

    2. The Old Town and the palace was totally ruined after the war. The palace was rebuilt in 1975 literally from the ashes. Like all the buildings in the old town. It's good to know that… And the palace of culture, your first stop, is soviet "gift". It was the first, the biggest and the highest biulding built after the war. Citizens didn't love it… Their homes were ruined, the real royal castle and the old town were ruined – and the soviets built us their "gift". It was more like a sign – " We (soviets) rule here, the city, the country is ours". So…. Now the palace is a part of the town, but still thete are people who hate it.

    3. Squealed when your tour guide appeared 😂

Spent a fair bit of time in Poland in the late 90s/early 2000s. Would love to go back. So many good memories of the places and people

    4. Thank you for the walkabout. I’ve been to Warsaw several times but the photokina and museum of life under Communism were unknown to me on those visits. I’ll be going back in October so have definitely added them both to my own touring around the city. Thank your friend for her tour.

    5. Poland isn't nice at all. If it was, there would be tons of tourist and migrants that want to stay there like in other popular parts of the world(not only western cities but also Asia)

    6. WOW !!! Steve you Alicja really out did your selves this time !!!

    7. As for The Palace of Culture and Science, it is "a gift from the Soviet nation to the Polish nation", which made it disliked by Poles. This is best illustrated by a joke:

"- Where is the best view of Warsaw from?

      – From the Palace of Culture.

      – But why?

      – Because you can't see the Palace of Culture from it"

    8. I remember getting lost in Lazienki Park. I was going to a classical music concert at a venue there. The taxi driver didn't know where to go and dropped me off at the wrong gate. This was a Saturday evening in January, temperature at least -10C, thick snow on the ground etc. Anyhow, I was well wrapped up and eventually found where I was going by following another concert goer who obviously knew the way. Thankfully no Latvian wolves! Love Warsaw.

    9. You've no idea how happy I was to see you mention Tczew Bridge to be the place where WW2 began! That's actually my birthplace and I live very close to that town, in this region we're taught in school to actually correct other people claiming Westerplatte is where the war began and you're presenting this fact to international public, thank you on behalf of all inhabitants of Tczew and its surrounding 😁
