Watch this video to find out whether a train can beat a plane?

Brightline just opened the newest intercity train in the United States in Florida between Orlando and Miami. With speeds up to 125 miles per hour, there’s a chance that taking the train is faster than flying. And, in this video, we’ll put that to the test.

We’ll also consider other factors, too. Not only will we test the time, but we’ll also compare the overall comfort, the ability to actually get work done, the onboard service, and the price. Using these factors, we think you’ll be able to figure out which mode of transportation you’d prefer!

But, ultimately, can the speed of an airline overcome the comfort and pace of high-speed rail?

Join us in this video as we pit Brightline against an Airplane in order to determine which mode of transportation is faster.

    1. Besides the obvious comfort advantages, the predictability and reliability of the train's schedule would win out, despite the journey taking somewhat longer.

    2. I'll take the 40-minute penalty (worst case) to be a civilized human vs a canned sardine. And that airline price was for economy, so the seat comparison? Waayyyy better on the train.

I travel between Paris and Amsterdam somewhat regularly when I go to Europe for vacation. The TGV train takes 3 hours 20 minutes from the center of Paris (Gare du Nord) to the center of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Centraal). No taxis or ubers needed, either, as both stations are well served by subways, trams, and city buses. The flight is only an hour and 25, but add an hour to get to the airport in Paris, 2 hours to be there early, and about an hour to get off the plane and into Amsterdam from the airport there – and you have close to 5.5 hours by plane. Assuming no checked bags. And the TGV is far more pleasant to be in! And comparing the First Class prices for both, the train is hundreds less.

    3. A very weird thing for me in there is no direct anything from Chicago to Springfield, MO. There is no train, not even Amtrack and the planes want to take you to , Orlando, Atlanta or even Dallas! So the tickets are expensive and we just end up driving. When we go to visit family

    4. Even if it’s faster than an airline in travel time due to airport delays, the cost of air travel is cheaper than the train. You easily can get round trip tickets under $160. It cost $80×2 for a round trip on Brightline which is ridiculous

    5. As expected, a lot of “hurry up and wait” in the plane trip. I do know the that there are a few bottlenecks on the brightline route. While they can’t make it true HSR without building entirely new tracks, I do wonder if they can find ways to shave off a bit here and there to bring the time to parity with flying.

    6. Can you tell us how do you go about the seat upgrade on Delta? Everytime I ask they say no even when the front seats are far from full……..

    7. That was fun. I now get to the Airport 2 hrs early because of security and wtvr. I can remember when it was about an hour. No going through security. And baggage check.and even when there was baggage check it went fast.
