In early November 2023, I travelled from London to Varanasi for a four day mini-break. My journey included a five hour layover in Larnaca. Unlike what most squares would do in this scenario, I decided to neither grab a short nap in a hotel or wait in the airport lounge, and instead made the 45 minute walk from the airport to the city/town centre, where I saw many cats and ate some falafel. A resort town both out of season and out of hours, there were a few bars open, but the town was quiet, and though perhaps not peaceful, it felt very empty. I passed a large lagoon where flamingoes can sometimes be seen. I walked past buildings of a variety of architectural styles. I saw many, many, cats, some sculpture, the dark Mediterranean and lots and lots of cars, meandering through the city at night. I walked back to the airport, passed through security and did get a 40 minute nap behind an unmanned check-in desk at one of the boarding gates. My journey continued eastwards.
