Kaysersberg is a former French commune located in the department of Haut-Rhin, in the Grand Est region.This small town is located in the historical and cultural region of Alsace and became, on January 1, 2016, a delegated municipality of the new municipality of Kaysersberg Vignoble.Its inhabitants are called Kaysersbergeois and Kaysersbergeoises.

Kaysersberg was voted France’s favorite village at the end of the France 2 program presented by Stéphane Bern on Tuesday. It was in competition with twelve other exceptional municipalities.

The authentic Kaysersberg Christmas Market is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in France and Alsace.

The Kaysersberg Christmas market is open the 4 weekends of Advent, i.e. the 4 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays before Christmas, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Christmas is Alsatians’ favorite time of year. The Kaysersbergeois, inhabitants of the medieval town of Kaysersberg, decorate their windows with fir garlands, the town becomes imperial and lights up as soon as night falls. The smells of cinnamon mingle with the scent of spicy mulled wine through the lively streets of the French Favorite Village 2017, this festive and joyful atmosphere sets in for the four weekends of Advent.

During your walk, your senses will be awakened: come and savor the local specialties with a good glass of mulled wine accompanied by bredalas (small Christmas cakes)

Throughout the city there is a fairytale atmosphere. The alleys sparkle, the windows and facades of the half-timbered houses are carefully decorated, the light garlands adorn the trees and fir trees and the delicious scents perfume the imperial city. In Kaysersberg, emotions and discoveries accompany your stroll. Intimate, the Christmas market perpetuates the customs of Advent and invites you on an enchanting journey, in the purest spirit of Christmas.

History of Kaysersberg:
Due to its strategic position which allows control of transit between Haute Alsace and Lorraine (via the Col du Bonhomme), the Kaysersberg valley has been occupied by soldiers since Roman times. At the beginning of the 13th century (around 1218), the fortress was built. It is the beginning of the prosperous period of the city, under the control of the Hohenstaufen family. Kaysersberg became imperial city of the Holy Empire in 1293.
