Lucéram is a French commune located in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.

Lucéram, the village of 500 crèches

Do you already know Lucéram, this small village in the Nice hinterland, Lucéram is especially renowned for hosting the largest number of crèches during the Christmas period. It’s everywhere. In the streets, cellars, barns, on window sills, and even in the communal bread oven. They have kept this village alive for almost 500 years during the month of December. Come, we’ll take you to experience a little Christmas magic!

It’s been a ritual for 25 years now. At Christmas time, thousands of small clay figurines appear throughout the village. Shepherds, water carriers, lumberjacks, farmers, millers and bakers are busy in their miniature Provençal villages. And tens of thousands of visitors go to Lucéram to visit them.

It is around Sainte-Barbe, at the beginning of December, that hundreds of small villages and their figurines take place in the village. This highly anticipated event in the region is organized by members of the Maison de Pays de Lucéram and Haut Paillon Association and the inhabitants of the village.

The Lucéram crèches are an unmissable event in the region.
It all started at Christmas 1996, when Christiane Ricord, president of the Maison de Pays, decided to install a giant nativity scene in the Saint Pierre chapel. This Provençal nativity scene is very special because it reproduces the village very precisely and includes around a hundred figurines. Following an article in the local newspaper, thousands of visitors come to Lucéram to see this crèche.

The following year, residents followed suit and created their own nativity scenes in front of their homes. The ritual was launched and the first “crèche circuit” was inaugurated in 1998. The phenomenon is growing more and more. From 33 nurseries at the start, we increased to 500 around twenty years later. And there’s something for everyone. The largest measures more than 10 m long!

But the village has other assets up its sleeve. It also has a typically Nice charm that is appreciable in all seasons.

Stroll through the village, and get lost in the network of stepped streets along which you discover beautiful restored residences. They were built in the country’s gray stone, made to withstand the ravages of time.
