Hello Everyone. Welcome to this walking tour video of Basel, Switzerland. In today’s video I have started from the bridge called Mittlere Brücke. It spans the Rhine River and is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

The Mittlere Brücke is the oldest bridge in Basel and has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. The bridge was originally built in the 13th century, with the first wooden bridge constructed around 1225. Over the centuries, the bridge underwent several reconstructions and renovations.

The current bridge is made of stone and was completed in 1905. It features a series of arches and has a distinctive appearance, contributing to Basel’s picturesque cityscape. From the bridge you can see the Rhine River. It is one of the longest and most significant rivers in Europe.

It originates in the Swiss Alps, flows through Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France, Netherlands, and empties into the North Sea in the Netherlands. The Rhine River has played a crucial role in trade, transportation, and cultural exchange throughout history. Let’s talk a little bit about this city.

And this is the Fish Market Fountain which is the only thing that remains of the medieval fish market. This street is called Kellergässlein. This street is called Peterskirchpl. This is the Johann Peter Hebel Monument. Johann Peter Hebel (1760–1826) was a German short story writer, dialectal poet, and Protestant theologian.

He is best known for his “Alemannic” dialect poetry, which includes the collection “Allemannische Gedichte.” Hebel’s work is appreciated for its simplicity, humor, and reflection of rural life. This place is called Petersplatz. On my left is the Basel University.

The University of Basel was founded in 1460, making it one of the oldest universities in Switzerland. It has a rich history and has played a significant role in the development of education and research in the region. This is the University of Basel Botanical Garden.

It is affiliated with the University of Basel and serves both educational and research purposes. The garden has a long history, dating back to its establishment in 1589, making it one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Over the centuries, it has undergone expansions and renovations.

The garden boasts a diverse collection of plants from various regions around the world. It serves as a living museum, allowing visitors to explore different plant species in themed sections, such as alpine plants, medicinal plants, and more.

This gate was constructed in the late 14th century, between 1370 and 1380, as part of the city’s fortifications. It was built in the Gothic architectural style and served as one of the main entrances to the city. This street is called Spalenworstadt. This fountain is called Spalenbrunnen. This street is called Spalenberg.

This street is called Hutgasse. This place is called Basler Stadtmarkt. This is the Basel Town Hall. The Basel Town Hall, known as the “Rathaus” in German It is one of the most significant and well-preserved buildings of its kind in the country.

The Basel Town Hall is a prime example of late Gothic architecture. It was built in the 16th century, and its design is characterized by ornate façades, pointed arches, and intricate details. The building features a red sandstone exterior, which adds to its distinctive appearance.

It is named after the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, who was known for his kinetic art and sculptures created from scrap metal and other found materials.
