Exploring Marseille, France | 4k60 HDR Walking Tour | European Walking Tours
Marseille is a vibrant port city located on the southeastern coast of France, facing the Mediterranean Sea. It’s the capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and the second-largest city in France after Paris. As of 2024, the population of Marseille is approximately 1,700,000.
Marseille is a cosmopolitan city. This is due to the location of the city. Marseille was and remains a major port that has historically facilitated migration. The majority of the population is, of course, French, but many come from North Africa and Italy. Large Armenian and Asian communities.
The mixture of nationalities influences the development and culture of the city. This manifests itself in food, music, festivals and everyday life. Marseille was founding by Greek sailors from Phocaea in around 600 BC. It one of the oldest cities in Europe.
In Medieval Period the city was part of the Holy Roman Empire and later the Kingdom of France. It was a significant trading center in the Mediterranean. During the Renaissance, Marseille continued to grow as a center of trade with the Middle East, Africa and the rest of Europe.
The city’s architecture and culture are beginning to reflect its prosperity and diversity. Under King Louis XIV in the 17th century the city was fortified and expanded. Marseille was struck by a devastating plague in 1720, which killed a large portion of its population.
The plague is believed to have arrived in Marseille on the merchant ship Grand-Saint-Antoine, which had sailed from the Levant. Despite signs of illness among the crew and a quarantine order, the ship was allowed to dock and unload its cargo.
Estimates vary, but it’s believed that out of a population of around 90,000, anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 people died in Marseille. Marseille took many years to recover from the demographic and economic impacts of the plague.
In the 19th century, Marseille developed as a port city, aided by colonial trade and the establishment of industry. And the advent of the railway in the 1840s linked Marseille more closely with the rest of France and Europe. During World War II, the city suffered significant damage.
The historic Old Port was bombed by the Germans in 1943 as they tried to destroy the French Resistance. After the war, the city took a long time to rebuild and this changed much of the architecture. Today Marseille is a city with a rich history of architecture and rich cultural life.
Vieux-Port (Old Port) is the heart of Marseille, lined with cafes and filled with boats, is where the city’s fishing fleet unloads its catch. We’ll walk through it later on this walk. Le Panier: Marseille’s oldest quarter, known for its narrow, winding streets and vibrant cultural life. Now we’re walking here.
Marseille is home to MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations). This is a stunning museum dedicated to the cultures of the Mediterranean, symbolizing Marseille’s big historical role. One of the symbols of Marseille is the majestic Notre-Dame de la Garde. Situated on a limestone outcrop with panoramic views of the city.
Now you can see the Marseille Cathedral. This is a large neo-Byzantine cathedral from the 19th century with a luxurious interior, frescoes, mosaics and marble. The Chateau d’If is located on a small island off the coast of Marseille.
This fortress later became a prison and is famous for being one of the settings for Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Count of Monte Cristo. It is a popular tourist attraction now. Marseille is also known for its football team, Olympique Marseille (OM).
They are one of the most popular football clubs in France with a passionate fan base. The club has a rich history, including winning the UEFA Champions League in 1993. Marseille is also considered the most criminal city in France.
Its status as a major port city has historically made it a focal point for various illegal activities. The most striking aspect of criminal activity in Marseille is its connection with the “French connection” in the 1950s to 1970s.
It was a major heroin smuggling network that exported drugs from Turkey to France and then to the US, with Marseille being a key hub. By the late 1970s, the network was largely dismantled thanks to the efforts of international law enforcement agencies.
Although crime is a serious problem in some parts of Marseille, it is important to say that the city attracts many travelers. The city is worth a visit for its beauty, culinary offerings and cultural attractions.
