Knightsbridge London 4K Walking Tour | Discovering Harrods and Vibrant Side Streets
Welcome to the Knightsbridge London Walking Tour In this video, we will be walking through one of the most luxurious neighbourhoods in London. Knightsbridge is a residential and retail district in central London, south of Hyde Park.
It is identified in the London Plan as one of two international retail centres in London, alongside the West End. Knightsbridge is also the name of the roadway which runs near the south side of Hyde Park from Hyde Park Corner.
Knightsbridge is an affluent district in London with a rich history and high property prices. The name has Old English origins, meaning “bridge of the young men or retainers.” The area was initially divided between local authorities and has been home to several parishes.
Knightsbridge has been associated with exclusive shops, banks catering to wealthy individuals, renowned restaurants, and high-end salons. Property prices in the district are among the highest in the world, with the most expensive apartment at One Hyde Park selling for Β£100 million in 2007.
The sculpture in front of us is Twelve Responses to Tragedy, or the Yalta Memorial. The memorial commemorates people displaced as a result of the Yalta Conference after the Second World War. Created by the British sculptor Angela Conner, the work consists of twelve bronze busts atop a stone base.
The memorial was dedicated in 1986 to replace a previous memorial from 1982 that had been repeatedly damaged by vandalism. The large building on our left side is the Victoria and Albert Museum. This place is the world’s largest museum of applied art (decorative arts and design).
The V&A has a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects. It covers 12.5 acres and 145 galleries. Its collection spans 5000 years of art, from ancient times to the present day, in virtually every medium, from the cultures of Europe, North America, Asia and North Africa.
The museum is sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The holdings of ceramics, glass, textiles, costumes, silver, ironwork, jewellery, furniture, medieval objects, sculpture, prints and printmaking, drawings and photographs are among the largest and most comprehensive in the world.
The museum possesses the world’s largest collection of post-classical sculpture, the holdings of Italian Renaissance items are the largest outside Italy. The departments of Asia include art from South Asia, China, Japan, Korea and the Islamic world. The East Asian collections are among the best in Europe, with particular strengths in ceramics and metalwork,
While the Islamic collection, with the MusΓ©e du Louvre and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is amongst the largest in the world. The V&A is in what is called London’s “Albertopolis”, an area of immense cultural, scientific and educational importance.
Near it are the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, Imperial College, the Albert Hall and the Albert Memorial. In front of us is the London Oratory or Brompton Oratory. It is a neo-classical late-Victorian Roman Catholic parish church in the Brompton area of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, neighbouring Knightsbridge, London.
The name The Oratory stems from the religious order, the Oratorians who own the building and service the parish. The church’s formal title is the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Its Grade II* architectural listing refers to it as “The Oratory”.
The Oratorian priests there celebrate Mass daily in both the Ordinary and Extraordinary forms. Due to its location and character, the church attracts expatriate worshippers and visitors from many countries. After World War II, it temporarily hosted the parish of the Polish diaspora in London.
The church has a reputation for the quality of its Liturgical music and the notable musicians who perform there, among them, the late Ralph Downes. There are three choirs at the church.
The London Oratory School in the nearby London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham is closely connected to the church, having been founded by the Oratorians.
