Zamek Eltz – klejnot średniowiecznej architektury w sercu Europy

Moselle, one of the most beautiful rivers in Germany.
But today, this film is not about it,
because about 2 km from its banks
    there is a certain…
    …mystery.
    Fußweg Burg Eltz
or the footpath to Eltz Castle
    15 minutes.
    We’re going downhill.
    Beautiful nature trail.
    I suspect another 3 km
Where all these people are going.
    Beautiful rocks, slate.
Very good material for houses and castles.
Just like in Cochem on the Moselle.
Actually, I think we’re above the Moselle.
Well, we’ve walked a bit and
are we going to those ruins?
A pile of stones and that’s it?
But the trail is very nice.
    End of the nature trail,
    well, maybe 200 meters
but here is a beautiful valley,
beautiful, mountains and the Middle Ages.
    11th century,
it began with a simple knight’s guard.
    Castle, knight’s castle.
    It was expanded,
it was built for 500 years.
The founder of the castle was Rudolf von Eltz.
There were no surnames in the Middle Ages,
we remember Zbyszko from Bogdaniec, Jurand from Spychów.
Around the castle flows a small river Elzbach
and it is probably from it that the family got its surname.
The aforementioned Rudolf von Eltz had three sons who divided the castle into three parts,
but the most interesting fact was that they all decided to stay here with their families.
As the three families grew together,
there was a lack of space in the nest,
so the castle could only be built upwards and today we can admire – a medieval tower.
The castle remained intact during wars not only because it was hidden and difficult to conquer,
but also because the Eltz family were educated, wealthy, they were politicians, military men and of course clergymen
like Arnold von Eltz, bishop of Szczecin-Kamień or Jakub II, archbishop of Trier.
Eltz Castle owes its uniqueness to the fact that for 850 years it was in the hands of one family,
and to this day it remains the property of the members of this family,
represented by Dr. Karol, Count of Elz,
    the thirty-third generation,
and its owner plans to hand it over to the 34th generation of the Eltz family.
    – Excuse me
    – No camera
    We already know everything.
There is a total ban on filming and photography inside, even in the souvenir shop.
Instead, I will tell you the legend of Agnieszka:
In the 15th century, the daughter of one of the von Eltzs – Agnieszka became the fiancée of a nobleman from Braniewo (yes, that one located in Warmia),
but the drunken fiancé was publicly insulted when Agnieszka did not give him the desired kiss during the engagement.
The nobleman was offended and vowed revenge.
When the lords of the castle went hunting, then together with their vassals they attacked the castle.
To his surprise, command over the defenders was taken by Countess Agnieszka.
She was an excellent archer and ironically she was fatally wounded, hit by an arrow released from the bow of her fiancé.
This enraged the defenders, who in the end drove out all the attackers.
    Now this is a balcony.
    With a beautiful view.
And if only I had a bow,
    I could shoot myself.
So we were in those rooms.
There are not many of them. Bedroom, knight’s hall, kitchen to visit.
Tight, small, these armor were so tiny as if the Germans who lived here were, they were like, like little dwarfs.
And I forgot to mention that
there are 28 toilets in each room.
It’s luxury for the Middle Ages.
    Can you do it here?
    …yes, we can film here!
This part of the castle has been transformed into a museum. There are collections of paintings, rich collections of militaria and everyday costumes here.
As I mentioned, those knights were
very small, he’s still standing on a pedestal.
    – And?
    – Lilliputians, small.
