Nuremberg: History, War & Art Treasures – Viking Grand European Tour Day 8

hello and welcome to day eight of our Viking Grand European river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest today is day 8 and we’re in the city of nurburg Germany we sailed from bomberg Germany down the mine danu Canal to Norberg arriving bright and early the next morning and bright and early was an understatement as we had to have our room vacated by 8:00 a.m. and the tours left at 8:30 a.m. more on that later in this video I will give you a little idea of the three available excursions in nberg the standard one and two optional excursions we’ll begin with the standard tour which is nberg through history and we’ll proceed to the Nazi rally grounds then walk to the Imperial Palace and then down the hill to the Stalls at the market square and we finish up with lunch in the Oldtown the first part of the tour was all by bus and the ship was parked fairly far from downtown so we made our way over to the Nazi party rally grounds and all we did was drive by during the rise of the Nazi party nberg was considered the most German of German cities so it was an ideal location at which to Stage large rallies and several structures were built including Congress Hall the grasa where parades were held and finally Zeppelin field which was famous for the Hitler rallies we continued on our bus tour and drove all the way across town to find the bookends to the Nazi rallies and that was the home of the nurg trials we drove by the Palace of Justice in which is the courtroom 600 where the nurg trials took place again all we did is drive by these places but if you’re interested in more detail I would suggest the optional tour nurg through World War II next the bus proceeds up the hill up the rocky outcrop to the Imperial Castle which overlooks the city this is a good thing because it’s a fairly brisk walk or steep walk to get up to the castle from below we were let off on a street right behind the castle on the top of the hill so it was simply a matter of walking through the T to get into the castle grounds the Imperial Palace is not a single Palace but it’s a group of fortified buildings known as nberg castle with the city walls it’s considered one of Europe’s most impressive medieval fortifications the construction began around 1,000 ad and the castle continued to be added to the walls were built between the 12th and 16th century and originally stretched for 5 km but but today they’re still 4 km of the wall Still Standing we took a guided walking tour through the castle grounds itself and the views from the castle wall into the city were absolutely spectacular we were troubled with just a little bit of rain but the views were still great the castle itself sits a top of Sandstone Ridge that dominates the center of nberg this provided a natural defense the tower you see on the left there is the oldest part of the castle but if you decide that you want to walk up to the castle from town please be advised that it’s a very steep walk and takes a little bit of effort to get up here going down of course is much easier so we start down the hill pausing by the old rot house and the St sabales Church along the way you see lots and lots of half timbered buildings flowers hanging out of the windows it is just absolutely gorgeous be sure to look up at some of the signs you see as well as the building facades we pause for a moment at The Old City Hall and St sabales Church you go into the church on another tour so we continue our walk down to the main Market Square passing by a brir house and nurmberg is famous for its nurger brir if you have the chance you should really try some next we enter the main Market Square and we go by What’s called the beautiful Fountain the shoner brunin this Fountain was built between 1389 and 1396 and resembles a gothic church Spire but there’s a popular Legend it involves two rings on the fence if you turn the Golden Ring why making a wish it said to come true the black ring on the other hand is believed to bring good luck to women home hoping to have children we finally walked through the market square past the Ship of Fools which is modeled after a wood cut by Al Dura and then we head inside for a little lunch on this beautiful place over the river and then we get on the buses and take the long trip back to the ship more on that later we’ll now take a look at the optional Excursion nberg and World War II and in this we’ll actually go to Zeppelin field go inside Congress Hall and visit the Documentation Center and finally visit courtroom 600 in the Palace of Justice after bus trip from the dock our first stop is zeppelin field which actually started out as a field for durables Zeppelins in 1909 construction began in the 1930s under Hitler and was designed by Albert Spear his architect the scale is staggering the center piece is a massive grand stand that could hold up to 200,000 people it was designed to overwhelm visitors with the sense of Nazi power and massive rallies were held here when the Americans began their occupation it was renamed to Soldiers Field and was used not only for military parades but also for sports events and German American fun fairs next up is the grossa stas of the great Street was built between 19 35 and 1939 and it’s the central axis of the Nazi party rally grounds it’s 2 km long 60 M wide and points directly towards the nberg castle in the distance it was used for large parades and processions entering the rally grounds now turning away from the great Street we see the Congress holla and the Documentation Center the Congress holla looks like a Mis placed relic of ancient Rome it was designed by Albert Spears and it was intended to mimic the Roman Coliseum it was never completed because of World War II but it would have seated 50,000 and it was Hitler’s fantasy that the podium would be in the center of it and all the seats would face it the Documentation Center is housed in the leftover structure and you can go inside and get some more information about what really happened here and even look at this poster for the Christmas Market where all the Jewish businesses were prohibited from selling there are also some moday uses of the facility including this newberger Symphony Hall so it’s back on the bus for a long drive across town to the Palace of justice and the courth house where the nurg war trials were held this is a very sobering visit you actually see the courtroom in which the trials were held along with black and white pictures of some of the defendants in the stands watching the proceedings there is an excellent exhibition in the hall itself that gives you some of the history of the trials and what went on I do encourage you to listen to some of the audio of the defendant themselves speaking so it’s back on the buses and that finishes that tour and now we’re going to look at the third surviving the war art in nurmberg like the other tours this starts out as a bus tour around the city walls then you visit Alber durr’s house and the Subterranean bunkers that hid artwork and finally the gothic church of St seal we start near the main train station in the opera house as well as the deutche on museum the Railroad Museum here you can get a look at the start of the 4 km of medieval walls that surround the city there is a moat in which you can walk nearly around the entire city if you wish this is where the main train station is located as well these well preserved walls that you can walk around the opera house where you could even see man of lancha and a German Railway Museum where you can see old and the new side by side next we take the bus up the hill to behind the castle and get off and walk into the square called the tear Garder tour here you will find two of the attractions we are visiting today not to mention that there is an absolutely spectacular view of the castle from below and then over the city itself this is the square where the armorer for the castle Liv from here you could also see the defensive walls for the castle albre D’s house is in this square and you can go inside he was considered the greatest German Renaissance artist and was born here in 1471 he did painting print making and also mathematical Theory opposite the dur house is the historical art bunker this was a series of tunnels underneath the castle that in 1940 were converted to storage room for priceless works of art to prevent them from being bombed the art that was stored here included stained glass windows statuary and even the crown jewels there was a movie made called The Monuments Men that details how these artworks were liberated after the war and returned to their rightful owners next we take a walk down the hill to The Old City Hall and the St seal Church St caldis is a very important Church in nurg and it was finished in 1275 but unfortunately was badly damaged during World War II but has since been restored to its beauty St sabales was the patron saint of nurburg and this elaborate Trum houses the relics of St sabales although judging by the snails it’s not going anywhere very fast there is also a treasure of art on the walls on the altars and in the stained glass windows so be sure to take time to look around we also ran into an organist who was messing around with the organ and it added a nice atmosphere as we looked around the church [Music] finishing up we head further down the hill to the Old Market we pass by the beautiful Fountain which I mentioned earlier and look around the market now we’re worried about this if you get here at Christmas time it is spectacular it is world real now and there are lots of stalls lots of people glue Vine and just about anything else you would want you can also pick up some samples of La cukin which is gingerbread and originates here in nurg now I would be remiss if I didn’t mention two other things that nberg is famous for and that’s root beer and newberger brur be sure to try some before you leave well that’s it for nerur and we got back on the buses and we were supposed to sail from nberg to Regensburg tomorrow however due to very high waters we had to be bust past rensburg to Passau and then come back to rensburg the next day look for that in the next video and while you’re at it I certainly would appreciate it if you would subscribe to this channel as it helps us out a lot thanks [Music] oh [Music]

    1. Great job on the videos. We are headed out on Viking’s Grand European Cruise this Friday with extensions on both ends. Found your videos very informative. Thank you.

    2. We were eagerly waiting for your video about our hometown of Nuremberg. It was very interesting to see what tours were offered for the cruise passengers. You saw the most important highlights of Nuremberg and showed it very well in the video. 👍👍It is striking that Nuremberg's Nazi past is visited more by foreign visitors than by Germans. This is certainly because we as Germans really cannot be proud of this darkest time in Germany. The Nazi party rally grounds are now used for festivals and open-air concerts, i.e. for the opposite of their original purpose. But there are always discussions about what should be done with this area. Thank you for the great video! 😊😊🐷
By the way, we are at the moment on a 3 month trip through your home country and we will probably in Chicago in some weeks. So expect a video about Chicago in some months! 😁😁
