This film is a Tour of South West England by Car visiting several locations.
It is Split into 2 parts and Part One was shown on 4 May 2024 and can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua4ZV8HwBb4
This Part (2) is slightly longer and will be of particular interest to those people who like ships.
The film begins at Falmouth Docks and several ships are seen including Dry Dock. This film was taken during the Seaman’s Strike and several ships are seen at anchor on the River Fowey as a Ferry trip to St Mawes takes place. The River Fowey is very busy with Merchant Ships. A visit to Polperro although Plymouth is also shown. Several Royal Navy ships are seen including 2 Aircraft Carriers HMS Centaur and HMS Eagle. There are some more ships to be seen, followed by a Military Aircraft flying over.
Saltash Bridge is crossed and a few vehicles are also crossing but by no means very busy. The end of the film shows the ruins of Kenilworth Castle together with a few cars of the era.
Falmouth Docks
Falmouth Docks are a deep-water docks of the town of Falmouth in Cornwall. The docks are the southern shore of the Fal Estuary which is the third largest natural harbour in the world and the deepest in Europe. They extend over 30 hectares (74 acres) and covers a range of services to shipping such as repair, refuelling, cleaning and disposal of waste services. The docks are served by the Falmouth Docks railway station. Policing is by the Falmouth Docks Police.
Falmouth Docks are built on the northern shore of Pendennis Point, on the estuary of the River Fal which is also known as Carrick Roads. The Fal Estuary is often described as the third largest natural harbour in the world and the deepest in Europe. On the southern side of the docks are Falmouth Docks Railway Station and the terminus of the A39 road.
In the 21st century the docks have three graving docks with a capacity of 100,00 dwt and wharfage of 2.5 km. Ship repairs, cleaning and the disposal of waste products are among the facilities offered by the seventeen tenants. Pendennis Shipyard relocated to the docks in 1988 and build and repair luxury yachts.
St Mawes
St Mawes is a village on the end of the Roseland Peninsula, in the eastern side of Falmouth harbour, on the south coast of Cornwall.
River Fowey
The River Fowey is a river in Cornwall.
It rises at Fowey Well about 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west of Brown Willy on Bodmin Moor, not far from one of its tributaries rising at Dozmary Pool and Colliford Lake, passes Lanhydrock House, Restormel Castle and Lostwithiel, then broadens below Milltown before joining the English Channel at Fowey. The estuary is called Uzell. It is only navigable by larger craft for the last 7 miles (11 km). There is a ferry between Fowey and Bodinnick. The first road crossing going upstream is in Lostwithiel. The river has seven tributaries, the largest being the River Lerryn. The section of the Fowey Valley between Doublebois and Bodmin Parkway railway station is known as the Glynn Valley. The valley is the route of both the A38 trunk road and the railway line (built by the Cornwall Railway in 1859). The railway line is carried on eight stone viaducts along this stretch.
The Bodinnick to Fowey car ferry provides easy access between mid and east Cornwall. It is ideal for day trips between Looe or Polperro in East Cornwall and Fowey and further down to west Cornwall. For walkers it provides access in particular to the Hall Walk starting or ending in Bodinnick.
Polperro
Polperro is a large village, civil parish, and fishing harbour within the Polperro Heritage Coastline in south Cornwall.
Plymouth
Plymouth is a port city in Devon, southwest England. It’s known for its maritime heritage and historic Barbican district with narrow, cobbled streets. Sutton Harbour is home to the National Marine Aquarium, where sharks and rays glide in a deep tank. Also in the harbour are several marinas and a fish market, the Plymouth Fisheries. The Mayflower Steps are where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World in 1620.
