Discovering RAVENNA & CITTA DEL CASTELLO: Ep. 83 Ultimate World Cruise: Hidden Gems in Italy
welcome to Venice Venice this isn’t Venice exactly on the itinerary it says Rena Venice talk about deceiving unless you do your homework we assume we’d be dock in Venice or very close to it it’s actually 118 miles a 3-hour bus ride one way to Venice from Rena even Rena city is a 20-minute ride from the industrial port while we’re docked oh good morning we’re in Rena Italy and today you’re not going to believe what we’re going to do okay we’re just getting off the ship we rent to the car and what we’re going to do is we’re going to drive to for about an hour and a half drive to this really cool Italian Village small village and we have a kind of a rustic hotel that we we rent it not for the night there it’ll be really neat we’re going to get an authentic experience a lot of people they’re going to Venice but we’ve been there couple two three times so we elected to do this and it’s going to be fun so we’ll take you along on this neat little adventure of ours we’ve never been there we have Google Maps and it’s going to be a day of exploring uh yeah we’re in Rena Italy and uh a lot of people are getting off and they’re going to Venice because they’ve never been to Venice before and when we booked the the the uh Cruise it says Venice has the actual stop but we know better it’s 3 hours drive one way so many people are going there to spend the night because it’s the only way you can go there pretty much and see it we’ve been there many times so we’ve elected not to go and we’re we rented a car we’re taking a taxi in to get the car to the center we’re heading to the mountains to a small town called Chita Castello which means the castle City shows you how you can walk around and see all the historic sites and whatnot and where it’s located in the umbrea area region and then this is the wall you see it’s a walled city um unless you go in there as the old town otherwise this it still looks old to me Italy does but it’s where the normal regular Italian city is but the lynen trees right right here they smell so good like it smells like perfume kind of and they’re all over Europe this is the time of year when they’re in bloom and they they you can smell it all over the city almost smells like honeysuckle you know how a honey honeysuckle smells that’s what it smells like but the whole town smells like that from these trees well this is where we’re staying in the residencia antia Cana part hotel and we’re in this charming town called Chita Castello yeah so this old town is not packed with tourist which is kind of cool oh look at those earrings the city is just what I was hoping for a Charming authentic Central storico which means the center with mostly local visitors here is the Piaza the square in the heart of the town where locals gather to socialize enjoy a coffee or just simply watch the world go by there is places like that waiting to be discovered gosh yeah I mean you have to almost be a local to know that this is here yeah summer time gets very hot like on the low lands T oh the locals come up here because it’s in the mountains in the mountain it’s about cool I mean like outside the city you have the farms and it’s it’s all spread out you have small communities and this is kind of a the hook [Music] [Music] who look this keeps going H yeah with tourism definitely not the main source of income people support themselves by the fertile lands that are surrounding the town which are perfect for cultivating tobacco and that’s the main source of income they’re also known for producing a high quality olive oil and wine which are celebrated both locally and internationally let’s see what the local Boutique shop has to offer is it neutral enough yeah yeah it’s better can go with many many things okay we picked out a purse purse yeah something to remember CH the Castell s how long do they age H like that boy oh this is you don’t see hams like that oh this like a wine bar oh really yeah remember we did that before and you got to try all those cheeses I like that idea what time is he open this is when it’s it’s like about A4 to 6 right now and in Europe uh Europe is this is when the cestas are over it’s a lot cooler people start coming out sh shops are opening restaurants are starting to get open that this is when you really want to come out so we’re so glad we took a day and left the ship for for a night and came up to this little Mountain Village town and just had a little getaway they’re I think they’re lights you probably put them in a bedroom or something oh yeah yeah like the the umbrella you put the light bul in the umbrella yeah they’re they’re different you see a lot of unique stuff yeah you sure do uhhuh 62 really I sure they’re all handmade this is like a florist lots of little entrepreneurs everywhere they have narrow history homes oh wow they are narrow each one’s a different home yeah yeah every door is a a different different home and they share they share the walls they you see like we have the numbers yeah 20 22 24 so like on this side of the the street or the square wow is the even numbers and if you go on the other side there’s going to be the odd numbers okay these cobblestone streets they bear the marks of time each step connecting the past with the present walking along them I wonder how many people have stepped on the same path over the centuries this is the death notices looks like looks like a wine bar oh look at they have an upstairs cocktail bar things are going to alen up here oh look how neat that bar is [Music] this not place right here oh ice cream ice cream ice [Music] cre Watchtower is right [Music] here we’re going to get the real Italian food here the real deal is it in Spanish no I mean Italian English Okay decent prices wow the most expensive thing is €1 15 we just can’t get over these old buildings they’re so rustic looking we were looking at this building the the the side of it is unfinished brick and then like this front oh the clock yeah not sure what these are for but it’s interesting interesting [Music] Decor homade Italian ravioli let’s see if it’s any [Music] good as the sun began to set the town took on a magical glow the stone buildings and cobblestone streets were bathed in a warm Golden Light we found ourselves back at the PIAA where locals gathered for their evening dinner they were legis walking to socialize and unwind we joined in blending into the rhythm of the local [Music] life you like your clong really spending a day and a night in chat Castello we enjoyed every moment it was a refreshing change from the hustle and the bustle of the tourist heavy destinations the town’s charm lies in its authenticity its ability to transport you to a similar time we’re grateful for the opportunity to experience the local life and connect with the wonderful people of this hidden J in Umbria now we’re heading back to Rena let’s journey together on this beautiful city of mosaics welcome to the Old Town of Rena its history is as vibrant as it’s mosaics once the capital of the Western Roman Empire we’re here to see the mosaics which in particular stand as a testament to reena’s significant during these periods after we get our tickets we’ll start heading over to see the mosaics the mosaics are more than just beautiful works of art they’re Windows into a bygone era reflecting the religious cultural and political landscape of their time our first stop is the MAA Liam of galap plaia One of the most remarkable sites in Ren The Starry Sky Mosaic on the ceiling is particularly captivating golden stars set against a deep blue background symbolizing the heavens the walls depict various Christian symbols and scenes including the Good Shepherd surrounded by his flock the vibrant colors and the detailed designs sure are artistic as hard hard to believe this modest looking building from the outside hides the most spectacular interior and the oldest mosaics in the city this is the Basilica of the San Vitali the jewel of renous Mosaic Crown oh wow the floor the floor little tiny mosaics on the floor it’s a church and it’s unreal yeah yeah it’s pretty spectacular I mean we’ve seen a lot of churches but the mosaics Are Over the Top This the most beauti well we’ve seen a lot but I think the the mosaics I think put it to another level for sure wow yeah the floor is [Music] [Music] unreal yeah the alter the alter is amazing these mosaics are celebrated for their their realism and the ability to convey both spiritual and political messages you can’t even imagine them trying to place those little tiny pieces of mosaics over their heads it’s crazy so much detail I can’t really get [Music] it that’s impressive this is definitely worth coming to now we’re entering the Baptist of neon it’s one of the oldest monuments in Rena its octagonal structure is topped with a dome with a magnificent Mosaic depicting the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist surrounding this Central scene are the TW Apostles each rendered with unique expressions and poses the gold it catches the light creating a shimmering effect that adds a sense of divine presence present to the [Music] Sea think it has any meat on it it’s the only Pizza that you should eat and look at the crust I’m this is the best pizza ever I don’t eat pizza but usually like if this is the only pizza if you’re going to eat pizza this is the only Pizza to eat like in it they have it in a big square of pant yeah it’s like a sheet pan oh and they cut the piece that you want then they weigh [Music] it goodbye Rena we had an amazing two days here we spent the night we uh we really enjoyed it and now we’re heading north to Trieste and we have 12 hours there so we’re going to look forward to that this area is really shallow and so they had to put in this really long Jetty uh it’s quite impressive and then on the jetty there’s fishing houses what they’re called officially but you can tell that they put down the nests and actually fish there and there’s a bike route that goes all the way to the end of The Jetty on both sides and there’s people uh biking all the way out there looks like it’d be a really nice place is [Music] div yeah welcome to tr day

I don't do Italy…..Anyone try to pickpocket you………
This was such a beautiful video. The mosaics were amazing and so was your trip to a non touristic destination. So lovely!
Beautiful ❤️ ❤
Awesome!
Real charm Italy at her finest. I love these little towns in Italy where it isnt over-run and overpriced for tourists.
In small villages like this you get a true sense of local life.
And what I love so much is siesta. Now thats living!
The piazza and wide areas are super relaxing and it all seems so friendly.

Bellissimo❤️💓
Bella Bella
Perfecto
Seriously put your damn seat belts on in the back of a car. Love your videos but this freaks me out every time you do it.
Adding Ravenna to my dream to visit locations… Some years ago I visited Warsaw for work and really envied the way people gathered in the Old Town with friends and family for an afternoon or dinner at a cafe. It felt like such a lovely way to live in community in a way we don't have here in the states. Seeing these Italian locations capture that same sense – thank you.
Another very informative video. Thank you 👍
That mosaic church was stunning – we stopped doing magnificence in the west, but I'm reminded of the buildings in Abu Dhabi? where you stopped that were equally amazing in a modern opulent (and rather less Christian!) way. I think you made a good choice to avoid Venice – though it's good that they are taking care of Venice by disallowing cruise ships direct access now. It must have been amazing to do but destructive to the lagoon and the city.
Very interesting and informative. We're cruising out of Ravenna next year.
What lovely town
Thanks so much for taking us along
🌟🥂🌟
And mosaic in Ravenna are gorgeous
Dear Tressa & Zarko
glad you hired a car and escaped to
Citta di Castello beautiful medieval castle town, situated on the Tiber river, where the ancient site of Tifernum Tifernum is,
many famous architectural monument sites are here such as Palazzao.
The cobbled stone streets and paving is
everywhere,
enjoy authentic real italian hand made pasta, Italian meats, cheeses, wines,
and also designer boutiques of Italian best goods, and clothing, nestled into this medieval town. The town is sooo clean, the beauty is like a fairytale and the trees have emerald green leaves that smell like honeysuckle
Ravenna took my breath away seeing the beauty.
Yah how is it possible to paint, construct, build, those brilliant artworks of coloured mosaic ceilings?
at
Basilica di San Vitale,
Basilica di Santa Apollinare, and the Mausoleo Galla Placidia, Mausoleo di Teodorico the great
and the Battistero
Bellissimo Italy
