e lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news good news announcing peace proclaiming news of Happiness Our God Reign our god reigns our god reigns Our God Reign our god reigns in the name of the the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all and with your spirit we welcome you to mass here in Maga this evening on the Feast of St Thomas the Apostle famous for his doubt but even more glorious for his faith in Christ that developed and contined to develop to the end of his life as a martyr brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred Mysteries you were sent to heal the contrite of Heart Lord have mercy Lord have mercy you came to call sinners Christ have mercy Christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us Lord have mercy Lord have mercy May almighty God have mercy in US forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen glory to God God in the highest and on Earth peace to people of Good Will We Praise You we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory Lord God Heavenly King oh God Almighty father Lord Jesus Christ only begotten son Lord God Lamb of God Son of the father you take away the sin of the world Mercy on us you take away the s of the world receive our pray you are seated at the right hand of the father Merc Mercy on us for you alone are the Holy One you alone are the Lord you alone are the most high Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father amen amen let us pray Grant almighty God that we may glory in the feast of the Blessed Apostle Thomas so that we may always be sustained by his intercession and believing may have life in the name of Jesus Christ your son whom Thomas acknowledged as the Lord who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever amen a reading from the letter of St Paul to the Ephesians brothers and sisters you are no longer strangers and sojourners but you are fellow citizens with the Holy ones and members of the household of God built upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets with Christ Jesus himself as the Capstone through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord in him you also are being built together into a Dwelling Place of God in the spirit the word of the Lord thanks be to God go out to all the world and tell the good news go out to all the world and tell the good news praise the Lord all you Nations glorify him all you peoples go out to all the world until the good news for steadfast is his kindness for us and the Fidelity of the Lord endures forever go out to all the world and tell the good news Hallelujah hallelu alelu [Music] hallelu you believe in me Thomas because you have seen me says the Lord blessed are those who have not seen but still believe hallelu hallelu [Music] ALU [Music] hallelu the Lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy Gospel according to John glory to you oh Lord Thomas called dimus one of the 12 was not with them when Jesus came so the other disciples said to him we have seen the Lord but Thomas said to them unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my fingers into the nail marks and put my hand into his side I will not believe now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them Jesus came although the doors were locked and stood in their midst and said peace be with you then he said to Thomas put your finger here and see my hands and bring your hand and put it into my side and do not be unbelieving but believe Thomas answered and said to him my Lord and my God Jesus said to him have you come to believe because you have seen me blessed are those who have not seen and have believed the gospel of the Lord praise to you Lord Jesus Christ there are two signs very clearly and one of them is specifically in the reading uh that Thomas actually became a person of extraordinary faith of Solid Faith of deep faith and obviously the celebration of his martyrdom is the expression of that and then we have the psalm uh 117 which is actually the shortest psalm and it’s one we used for the inauguration of Maga the archaeological Park and the Orthodox uh reformed Rabbi chanted it in our synagogue on that day back in May 2014 10 years ago and it says go out to all the world and tell the good news Well actually that line is not from the psalm it’s from Mark chapter 16 but the psalm we had was praise the Lord all you Nations glorify him all you peoples so go out to all the world okay Peter and Paul went to Rome and Paul went to Antioch and Peter went to Antioch and Paul went to all the are of turkey Ephesus Greece um and Malta Cyprus Malta he was in the Roman Empire Peter went as far as Rome some say James went as far as Spain and maybe there are other accounts there’s a account of going to Armenia I’m not sure how far outside the Roman Empire that was if it was Within Reach of the Roman Empire through different relationships but to go to India the Romans didn’t conquer India maybe they reached into the Persian Empire deep but they didn’t conquer India so I think go out of all the world and tell the good news Thomas gives an extraordinary example of doing this he goes out to all the world outside of the Roman world even of that time and even to cross the Empire at that time time you had to deal with all the different languages a little bit like Europe today and maybe even more so with more uh numerous dialects locally because of the lack of M massive communication of the masses so language was also a major boundary and barrier to go out to all the world and to go to different places where they don’t understand your language so this is a great witness of um Thomas the transformation of his life uh from being a doubter and the Very fact that he’s a doubter makes him very uh relatable for us how many people doubt it’s part of human uh this the human psyche it was part of the first sin to doubt God’s goodness this was the thought that was put into the first our first parents Minds God knows much better doubt him don’t trust and we need Trust to love and doubt is a major difficulty it’s also very interesting how concrete Thomas was with the wounds wanting to touch them put his finger in them put his hand in them and this is also very graphic it’s also very revelatory of how Jesus appeared with his wounds Risen Lord so our wounds uh seem to us to be Reas for shame in the Roman Empire in especially in the time of the Republic before the empire was formed there was great pride in bearing wounds from the battles for the Empire and we bear wounds mostly for a different kind of problem we take a lot of heart very much because of our selfishness and also because of the aggression of others and then we nurse our wounds sometimes not in a very redeeming way in a more um depressing way and the revelation of Christ’s wounds risen from the dead show us that the wounds can actually be a place of great Encounter of God’s love and mercy and a Redemption of both the Roman heroic style of treasuring wounds and a real healing of our present day victim mentality in the western world where we nurse our wounds into a self-absorption and so we need Redemption of wounds we need that our Lord’s Grace um changes us because Jesus is very confident when he comes even with his wounds he is glorious we he is the Glorious Risen Lord and he has his wounds and do not take in any way from his glory in fact in that Roman sense they highlight his glory but not in the sense of conquering others but in the sense of love and H uh self um giving Which is also part of the probably the Roman ethic that they had risked their lives and had encountered great danger for the sake of their people and here in the case of Christ it’s out of pure love without any hatred and without inflicting injury on anybody maybe we have to look again at our wounds maybe we have to redim menion concern about our doubts and maybe we can open our hearts for the growth that God wants to give us through Grace to become those fellow citizens and members of the household of God built on the foundations of the Apostles what an incredible role these people had and our role today is also to be the witnesses of Jesus there is no way anybody can come to Jesus without Witnesses and particularly the first 12 the foundational Witnesses of the Apostles but even today people need Witnesses and so let us pray that we can be also those strong temples of God where God lives in us and people can touch God in us and that’s true of every baptized person filled with the Holy Spirit confirmed in the context of life and Mission in the church in society we can be all places where God touches where people touch God where God touches people just like here we profess we uh we bring our petitions before God dear friends so often St Thomas is remembered as the Apostle who doubted but rather we should honor him as the one who came to a great depth of faith in the Risen Lord we pray that the example and prayers of St Thomas strengthen the faith of Christians who face persecution in many countries today Lord hear us Lord graciously hear us may all who believe without seeing be greatly blessed by the Lord this day Lord hear us Lord graciously hear us May all of us who doubt at different times in our lives experience the burden of doubt the unsettling nature of Doubt um remember that people have doubted before us and have become great Saints like Thomas Lord hear us Lord graciously hear us we pray for all the Christians of India who receive the Christian faith first of all through St Thomas that they grow in compassion in their dealings with others and strong in their faith especially when they face harassment and persecution Lord hear us Lord graciously hear us we H offer prayers of Thanksgiving to God for all the Indian Christians who around the world and provide
