Biot, medieval hilltop village with 2500 year history
Biot is a medieval hilltop village located just a few kilometers inland from Antibes, in the Alpes-Maritimes region of Provence. Known for its narrow cobblestone streets and stone archways, the village has a rich history dating back over 2,500 years.
In the 16th century, Biot became renowned for its pottery, producing amphorae that were exported throughout the Mediterranean.
Today, Biot is celebrated for its unique bubble glass, a craft introduced in 1956 by glassmaker Eloi Monod. Visitors can explore the village’s artisan workshops, the Fernand Léger National Museum featuring works by the famed cubist artist, and the History and Ceramic Museum showcasing Biot’s ceramic heritage.
The central Place des Arcades offers a glimpse into the village’s past, surrounded by historic buildings and local cafés. Despite its popularity, Biot retains a tranquil atmosphere, making it a worthwhile stop when exploring the South of France.
