The Plane That United A Nation

Today we’re taking a look at the SAA Museum’s “Lebombo” aircraft.
This is the Boeing 747 that flew over Ellis Park during the Rugby World Cup in 1995, cementing the moment in history.

  1. I flew on Lebombo to UK in 1981, in Economy and I still have the small Ceramic salt and pepper set plus small Ceramic toothpick holder.. We had Real cutlery as well plus a menu.. Those were the days..

  2. I traveled on some of SAA’s Jumbos many times when I was younger.
I ever remember sitting inside the cockpit of the -400.

Everyone watching one movie was just how flying was then.
It wasn’t add boring as you might think, because times were so different.
Cellphones didn’t exist, and TV at home had two or three channels.
We weren’t used the constant input, limited entertainment options were normal.

You could also listen to multiple audio options. You would select your audio channel. One of the channels was for the movie that was playing.

It was on a flight on a SAA 747 that I first listened to the comedian Bill Hicks.

  3. Lebombo was the first B747 that SAA took delivery of. This was in November 1971. I still recall clearly riding out to Salisbury Airport to watch its first landing and take-off there. Unforgettable!

  4. I arrived in SA from the UK in 1983 onboard SAA Tafelberg, fast forward to 2007 at my brothers Bachelors party at Hi-Flyers pub in Boksburg and found the cockpit in the pub as a decoration…took me and my brother back to our flight over in 83, we got a tour of the cockpit by the crew.
    Great memories.
