Rain. Blessed, blissful, merciful, needed rain. It was a cold, rainy weekend in the Gila National Forest for May standards, but it was beautiful all the same.
Showers came and went just about all weekend. Interrupting the rhythm of a regular camp outing. Stage 1 fire restrictions were in place, so we stayed close to a developed site in order to find a fire ring that could be used. The Continental Divide Trail runs right through the camp, so we dropped off some trail magic at a popular stopping point. Hope the class of 2026 has a great hiking year, hope you all stayed dry over the weekend.
The rain painted everything green, and the nasty weather along with mild cold kept a lot of springtime revelers in their homes.
It was an unexpected respite from record breaking heat. New Mexico yearns for a strong monsoon this year, but the overall forecast is for a bad fire season. I sure hope I'm wrong.
Either way, the Gila remains beautiful despite the fire. We just can't give up on it. Protect your public lands.

I live in NM and haven’t made it to the Gila yet. Did you disperse camp or go to a campsite? It looks awesome!
Gorgeous photos and a lovely rundown, hope to make it out there someday!
