The 9th arrondissement of Paris is a district of Paris located on the Right Bank of the Seine. It is the sixth smallest arrondissement of Paris and the eleventh most populous.
It is also known as the “Opéra arrondissement,” but this name is rarely used in everyday speech.
The arrondissement, established in 1859, owes its name to the Opéra Le Peletier (inaugurated in 1821 and destroyed by fire in 1873) and not to the Opéra Garnier (inaugurated in 1875).
The arrondissement is divided into two parts. One is flat and covers most of the Chaussée-d’Antin and Faubourg-Montmartre neighborhoods. The other belongs to the Montmartre hill, where the slope begins at the bottom of Rue d’Amsterdam, at Place d’Estienne-d’Orves, and at the bottom of Rue des Martyrs and Rue de Rochechouart. The current district was essentially developed in the 19th century, particularly during the Belle Époque.
